Even if the evolution of altruism in social insects turns out to be an exclusively genetic process, the evolution of altruism within human beings needs to be understood from the dual perspective of genetic and cultural change. In fact, there are two ways in which cultural evolution can depart from the usual pattern of genetic evolution.
